Homes in Prescott

Named after the well-known author William H. Prescott, the town of Prescott originated as a mining town upon the discovery of gold in nearby Lynx Creek in 1863. At that time, the town of Prescott was appointed the original capital of the Arizona Territory, in an attempt to keep the seat of government far from Confederate sympathizers in the southern part of the state. In 1867, the Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson. In 1877, Prescott once again became the Territorial Capital until the capital was finally changed to Phoenix in 1889.

During the nineteenth century, many communities in Arizona experienced anti-Mexican or anti-Chinese sentiments, forbidding the immigrants to find work. Prescott was a community that rose above this harsh sentiment, and offered Mexican and Chinese workers the opportunity to mine in Prescott land.

In the early part of the twentieth century, a number of major fires scorched buildings and homes in Prescott, specifically in the downtown area. As a result, downtown Prescott was rebuilt entirely with brick. Today, the Sharlot Hall Museum accommodates much of Prescott's territorial history, in addition to the Smoki and Phippen museums, which maintain the town's local prized collections. Prescott's downtown area is composed of several historic buildings, including the Palace (Arizona's oldest restaurant and bar), as well as other buildings that have been converted into shops, art galleries, bookstores, and restaurants. Residents of homes in Prescott can enjoy free guided walking tours of Prescott's historic downtown area, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m.
